What 3 “Big Picture” things can you do each day?

There is an easy and approachable tool that will help you take small steps toward your goal every day: A Daily 3 List.

Disclaimer: This assumes that you are clear on what your goal is. If you haven’t clarified your goal, set this aside and go do that. Maybe start by calling a career coach... Just sayin’.

The Daily 3 List is real simple. Every day make a list of three things that you can do that will get you a little closer to your goal.

Each of the three steps needs to meet 3 criteria:

  • Inline with a long term goal – If you can’t see how the action DIRECTLY feeds into creating your ideal career, it goes on a different to-do list.

  • Achievable by the end of the day – If the step will take a couple days to complete, figure out what you can do by bedtime. Think steps not staircases.

  • Beyond your daily list of tasks – This is about stretching yourself and going above and beyond what you are already doing. Make sure each step is not something you would do anyway.

Examples: Rewrite your resume; spend 20 minutes researching your desired industry; find 5 people on LinkedIn that have the job title you want and set-up informational interviews.

Creating a great career is like eating an elephant.

One bite at a time.

For the next 7 days, write a “Daily 3” list and commit to accomplishing each task by the end of the day. Track your progress by saving the lists. This takes practice, so don’t get discouraged!

The point of this exercise is reach your long-term goal by committing to spend a little time each day.

Good Luck!
